Narayan Prasad Kandel is renowned as a senior figure in the business world and a dedicated community organizer within the Nepali American diaspora.
Born in Bihu, Karlim, Baglung District in 1961, Kandel’s family relocated to the Chitwan district of Bharatpur, where he initiated his socio-political and business journey. His entrepreneurial ventures in Nepal encompassed a book &and Stationery shop, Milan Pustak Pasal, in Chitwan, and a leadership role in various companies, including Chitwan Industry and Trade Corporation, Nabaganga Feeds Factory, Rupi Construction Company, Collective Hardware Company, and New Construction Services, as well as Chitwan Hardware.
Narayan Prasad Kandel made his foray into the United States in 2003 after several years in Las Vegas. His journey led him to Texas, where he established himself as the proprietor of Gorkha Bar & Grill, a well-known Nepali Indian restaurant in Dallas.
His involvement spans various domains, as he serves as both the owner and advisor of New-Construction Company Pvt. Ltd. and as the patron of Kandel Brothers LLC. His business ventures have been a continuous thread throughout his career, encompassing individual and collaborative projects since 1978.
Kandel’s commitment to community transformation dates back to 1978 and has been particularly active in recent years through his association with the Non-Resident Nepali Association. His involvement extends to his role as a member of the International Coordination Council for the 2021 – 2023 term.
Kandel also holds the distinction of being the founding President of the Nepali Public Progressive Forum, a significant social organization.
His notable social work includes active engagement in social-political movements in Nepal from 1978 to 2001. He initiated his political journey during the 1978 student movement, ultimately being elected as the Ward Chairperson of Bharatpur Municipality-8 in 1986, with a re-election in 1997. He also contributed to school management boards and presided over the Public –Health Organization in Bharatpur-8, Chitwan. He holds life memberships in various organizations, such as the Nepal Red Cross Society.
Kandel’s influence extended to the executive committee of the Construction Owners Association in Chitwan. He was a founding President of the Lions Club of Chitwan in 2002 and played a pivotal role as one of the five Founding Members of the People’s Progressive Forum, America, in 2012. He also served as a Central Committee member of the Overseas Nepali United Forum from 2019 to 2020 and as the President of People’s Progressive Forum America from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, he took on the role of a Central Committee member of the Overseas Coordination Committee and held life memberships in the Nepali Society Texas, Indreni Association, and Shree Pashupati & Buddha Mandir Dallas Texas.
